Technical and Business Writing/Editing
I took the class. Technical writing is not art, it is design.
Organize.
Outline.
Simplify.
Technical writing follows the above rules. Everything should be clear and easy to follow.
Business writing should also be organized, but it is also focused on specific issues and directed toward particular audiences. There are pre-existing forms used in business, such as business letters. That does not mean that one slavishly follows the pre-existing letter in an antique typing manual. While you do not reinvent the wheel, you do respect the form; but you also bend it to follow your needs. Be clear, be succinct, but do not say any more than essential. Why not? Because you want a dialogue, and you want the recipient of your letter to respond. Hence you always keep in mind the writer's tool: the hook. Yes, even in a business letter.
